Tokyo Monorail to Launch ‘Tokyo Panorama Line’ Nickname on Nov. 1
JR East (East Japan Railway Company) and PASMO will offer a QR code payment service called “teppay.”
JR East will launch the service in fall 2026 via an update to “Mobile Suica,” and PASMO will launch in spring 2027 via “Mobile PASMO.” The exact launch dates will be announced once finalized.
The name comes from the initials of “travel,” “easy,” and “partnership.” In addition to stores displaying the teppay mark, the service can be used at over 1.6 million locations nationwide in Japan that display the “Smart Code” mark, the unified QR code payment service provided by JCB (Japan Credit Bureau). Around summer 2026, merchants will also be able to accept online payments via the virtual card “teppay JCB Prepaid.” It will also offer a region-limited “Barichike (Value Ticket)” function for programs such as municipal cashless rebate schemes. You can also top up Mobile Suica and Mobile PASMO.
You can add funds to your teppay balance from a bank account, ATMs, or a View Card. By linking a View Card, you can use teppay without topping up; purchases will be processed as View Card credit card transactions even with a zero balance. You can spend beyond the previous Suica and PASMO balance cap of 20,000 yen.
If you already have the “Mobile Suica” or “Mobile PASMO” app, no new app download or registration is required. The two apps have more than 35 million users. Although the service was initially planned to launch with Suica alone, the two companies partnered with PASMO to ensure convenience. By providing a common QR code payment method, they aim to improve usability and clarity and enhance economic efficiency.
In addition to sending and receiving balances between the “Mobile Suica” and “Mobile PASMO” apps, the service can reach a broad user base regardless of Suica or PASMO service areas in Japan.
