JR East and PASMO to Launch “teppay” QR Code Payments in Japan
Japan’s Nankai Electric Railway will conduct a pilot of a touch payment daily fare cap discount service from December 1 through March 31, 2026.
If the total amount of fares paid in one day on Nankai Electric Railway lines using the same contactless-enabled card or a smartphone, etc., configured with it exceeds 2,200 yen, the excess amount will be discounted. Applies to adult fares only. For example, a round trip between Namba and Koyasan normally costs 2,860 yen; under this service, 660 yen is discounted.
The service covers all Nankai lines except eight stations where contactless gates have not yet been installed, and from December 5 it will also be available at five stations on the Koya Line between Shimo-Kosawa and Gokurakubashi. Even if the card number is the same, totals are not combined across different media. Lines of other operators and the “Smart Sukippu” product are excluded.
The company introduced touch payment at ticket gates in April 2021. Usage in fiscal 2024 totaled about 630,000 transactions, approximately 1.8 times the previous year, and from April to October this year it increased to more than five times year-on-year. The company will consider continuing the program based on the results of the pilot.
