JR East Suspends Services on Tohoku Area Lines Due to Earthquake on December 8
JR East (East Japan Railway Company) will begin shifting maintenance work on railway lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area to daytime hours starting in fiscal 2026.
Up to now, daytime maintenance work has mainly been carried out on local lines in regional areas, but this shift to daytime work will be fully implemented on lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area as well.
On the Keihin–Tohoku Line, JR East is considering a plan in which maintenance work will be conducted for three consecutive weekdays between Tabata and Tamachi stations, with trains operating through this section being diverted to run on the Yamanote Line tracks.
On the Yokosuka Line, the company is examining a plan to suspend train services between Tokyo and Shinagawa stations from the last train on Friday until the first train on Sunday, in order to carry out large-scale, continuous day-and-night construction work such as tunnel repairs. During this period, Yokosuka Line trains will turn back at Shinagawa Station toward Yokohama, and Sobu Rapid Line trains will turn back at Tokyo Station toward Chiba.
JR East will continue to improve safety for railway construction workers and promote work-style reforms, aiming to enhance safe and stable transportation and to build a sustainable maintenance system. Specific sections, frequency of implementation, timetable changes, and other details will be announced once they are decided.
