JR East Suspends Services on Tohoku Area Lines Due to Earthquake on December 8
Nagoya Railroad (Meitetsu) will review the schedule for the Nagoya Station area redevelopment project and the Meitetsu Nagoya Station renovation project, and will begin re-examining and revising the plans.
Although the company had been proceeding with the selection of contractors for demolition and new construction work, bids were withdrawn by participating applicants due to difficulties in securing personnel. As a result, it has become certain that the start of demolition work and other construction will be significantly delayed.
In selecting contractors, Meitetsu had taken into account the scale of the project, the difficulty of the construction work, and the long construction period, but the estimated construction costs and construction period are now expected to greatly exceed the original assumptions. The new schedule has not yet been decided.
Regarding the operating schedule of existing facilities within the Meitetsu Group, the Meitetsu Department Store Main Store (Main Building and Men’s Building) will close as scheduled on February 28, 2026. The future of the Meitetsu Bus Center, Meitetsu Grand Hotel, Sky Parking, and other facilities remains undecided.
The redevelopment project had been promoted jointly by five parties: Nagoya Railroad (Meitetsu), Meitetsu Urban Development, Nippon Life Insurance, Kintetsu Railway, and Kintetsu Real Estate.
