JAL Suspends Same-Day Standby and Upgrades at New Chitose Airport on December 12 Due to Snow
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Zoological Park Society will return the two giant pandas currently kept and exhibited at Ueno Zoo to China in late January 2026.
This is based on an agreement between the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the China Wildlife Conservation Association. The pandas to be returned, “Xiao Xiao” and “Lei Lei,” are twin giant pandas born at Ueno Zoo on June 21, 2021. Their parents, “Ri Ri” and “Shin Shin,” arrived from Sichuan Province, China, in 2011 and were returned in September 2024. These two pandas will be the only giant pandas remaining in Japan.
From December 16, free viewing of “Xiao Xiao” will be suspended. The viewing area for both giant pandas will be divided into several sections, and visitors will be guided by staff, moving along within about one minute. From December 23 onward, online reservations will be required, and from January 14, 2026 onward, visitors must apply online, with only those who win a lottery being able to view the pandas. From December 27 onward, due to quarantine, they will be exhibited indoors only.
