Metropolitan Expressway to Raise Tolls Around October 2026
NEXCO East Japan is calling on drivers to take wide-area detours via expressways such as the Joshin-Etsu Expressway and Ban-Etsu Expressway, as closures continue on the Kan-Etsu Expressway in Japan due to a major multi-vehicle collision.
As of 3:00 p.m. on December 27, both inbound and outbound lanes between Yuzawa Interchange (IC) and Tsukiyono IC remain closed. Police are currently conducting on-site investigations, and once they are completed, checks of the site and restoration work will begin. Work that can be prioritized, such as removing damaged information boards, will proceed first.
The timing for lifting the closure is undecided, and it is expected to take a considerable amount of time. Due to the closure, traffic has been concentrated on National Route 17, causing heavy congestion. NEXCO East Japan is urging people to refrain from nonessential travel using the Kan-Etsu Expressway and National Route 17.
