Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has raised the danger level for certain regions of Iran. It has also issued spot information (short-term travel advisories).
Most areas of the country, including the capital Tehran, have been raised to Level 3 (Travel Advisory: Avoid All Travel). Areas along the borders with Pakistan, Iraq, and Afghanistan, among others, had already been designated as Level 4 (Evacuation Advisory) or Level 3.
In Tehran, protests triggered by dissatisfaction with the deteriorating economic situation have taken place, and similar protests are continuing. The authorities have indicated a policy of thoroughly cracking down on riots that involve acts of destruction, and there have been arrests as well as deaths and injuries. In Iran, internet access and international phone calls are unavailable or very difficult to use, and the number of operating international flights has also decreased.
