West Japan Railway Company (JR West) will end operation of the “Hello Kitty Shinkansen” on May 17.
Service began on June 30, 2018. The train uses the 500 series Shinkansen, and its exterior features a ribbon motif packed with the idea of “connecting” and “tying together,” with Hello Kitty depicted as connecting the ribbon.
The train consists of 8 cars: Car 1 is the regional exhibition space “HELLO! PLAZA”; Car 2 is the specially decorated non-reserved car “KAWAII! ROOM”; Cars 3, 7, and 8 are non-reserved cars; and Cars 4 to 6 are reserved-seat cars. Inside the train, an original melody exclusive to the Hello Kitty Shinkansen is used for the in-car chime.
As part of the finale campaign, Car 1 “HELLO! PLAZA” features a message board where passengers can post and leave messages about their memories of the Hello Kitty Shinkansen, as well as the distribution of train-exclusive stickers and the lending of photo props.
