11 Railway Operators in Greater Tokyo to Launch Interoperable Postpaid Touch Payment Fare Service on March 25
Eleven railway operators in the Greater Tokyo area will begin mutual use of a postpaid fare service using contactless payments with credit cards and other means on March 25.
The initiative is being implemented jointly with Omron Social Solutions, Sumitomo Mitsui Card, JCB, and QUADRAC. By linking the fare-calculation system with “stera transit,” a public-transportation solution provided by Sumitomo Mitsui Card, and “Q-move,” a SaaS-based platform provided by QUADRAC, the system will enable interoperable postpaid ride services across the Greater Tokyo area.
The participating railway operators are Odakyu Electric Railway, Odakyu Hakone, Keio Corporation, Keikyu Corporation, Sagami Railway, Seibu Railway, Tokyu Corporation, Tokyo Metro (Tokyo Underground Railway), Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation, Tobu Railway, and Yokohama Minatomirai Railway, covering 54 lines and 729 stations across the 11 operators.
At the initial introduction, Sagami Railway will accept the service at ticket gates staffed by station attendants at all stations and at automatic ticket gates at some stations. Seibu Railway plans to expand the eligible scope to all lines and all stations by March 2027. The Hakone Tozan Cable Car and the Tokyu Setagaya Line are excluded from the new fare-calculation system.
Passengers can tap a contactless-enabled credit card or a smartphone configured with an eligible card on the reader of an automatic ticket gate to enter and exit stations. The applicable fare will be the standard adult fare (in units of 10 yen); child fares will not be offered. When transferring between Tokyo Metro lines and Toei Subway lines, 70 yen will be deducted from the interline standard fare. For transfers made outside the ticket gates, this discount applies only if the passenger enters the next station within 60 minutes of exiting the previous one. The service cannot be used in combination with commuter passes or other types of tickets.
