11 Railway Operators in Greater Tokyo to Launch Interoperable Postpaid Touch Payment Fare Service on March 25
East Japan Railway Company (JR East) has unveiled its dedicated luggage Shinkansen at the Morioka Shinkansen Rolling Stock Center in Iwate Prefecture, Japan.
All cars of one E3 series trainset have been modified, with every passenger seat removed. To allow cargo carts to be loaded as they are, the floor has been leveled, covered with steel plates, and treated with a non-slip finish. Belts installed inside the cars prevent cargo from shifting. The maximum loading capacity is 17.4 tons. The leading car features designs of representative transported goods, while the windows of the intermediate cars are decorated with locally produced specialty products that have mainly been shipped from each area.
From March 23, the train will operate from the Morioka Shinkansen Rolling Stock Center to the Tokyo Shinkansen Rolling Stock Center. The planned timetable has it departing just before noon and arriving around 4:00 p.m. It will be coupled with an E5 series “Yamabiko” service, with cars 1–10 used for passenger transport and cars 11–17 used for luggage transport. The system will also handle refrigerated products using temperature control equipment powered by the onboard electrical system, and in the future JR East aims to expand services to the Sendai area and Niigata area. Within the rolling stock centers, AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles) will be used to improve efficiency in moving luggage.
