Delta Air Lines Installs ‘Delta One Check-in’ at All U.S. Hub Airports
Fraport will open Terminal 3 of Frankfurt Airport in Germany on April 22.
Located on the south side of the airport, Terminal 3 began construction in October 2015. Phase 1 will feature three concourses—G, H, and J—and will be able to handle 19 million passengers per year. With total construction costs of 4 billion euros, it has become one of Europe’s largest privately financed infrastructure projects.
The terminal will handle both Schengen and non-Schengen flights, and 57 airlines currently operating from Terminal 2 will be progressively relocated there by early June. The facility will provide 21 security screening lanes, as well as 2,900 square meters of dining space and a retail area.
In the check-in hall, three sculptures by world-renowned artist Julius von Bismarck, collectively titled “First, Last, Eternal,” will be suspended from the ceiling. The sculptures measure 3, 5, and 7 meters in diameter and weigh 1, 2, and 3 tons respectively.
To connect with the existing terminals, a Skyline people mover system will operate as a supplement to the current people mover. The new terminal is separated from the existing terminals by two runways, so the trains will run on a detour route. Travel time between Terminal 3 and Terminal 1 will be 8 minutes, with trains running every 2 minutes.
Construction was carried out by Fraport subsidiary Fraport Ausbau Süd. Despite global supply chain disruptions and other challenges, the project was completed on schedule and within budget.
From January 27 to April 16, around 8,000 trial passengers will be used to verify that operations can run smoothly.
During the current winter schedule, Frankfurt Airport offers flights from Germany to 244 cities in 96 countries, with approximately 3,700 departures per week.
