Keisei Electric Railway to Boost Airport Access with New Line and Limited Express
Keisei Electric Railway will work to strengthen access in order to meet increasing demand resulting from the enhancement of functions at Narita International Airport in Japan.
Alongside the double-tracking of the currently single-track section between Narita-Yukawa and Narita Airport stations, Keisei will construct a new dedicated line for the Skyliner and a new limited express service with reserved seats scheduled to begin operations in fiscal 2028, creating a four-track system on that section.
The new line will span approximately 20 kilometers between Shin-Kamagaya and Inba-Nihon-Idai stations, increasing the number of trains in operation, including regular commuter trains. As a result, the travel time between Nippori and Airport Terminal 2 stations will be reduced to the low 30-minute range, and between Oshiage and Airport Terminal 2 stations to the high 20-minute range.
Because the project will require large-scale investment and a long period for cost recovery, Keisei will continue discussions and coordination with the national government of Japan, Chiba Prefecture, and Narita International Airport on development methods and cost sharing.
Keisei has also released part of the design image for the new limited express with reserved seats. Although the maximum operating speed is planned to be 160 kilometers per hour, details such as the operating pattern and train nickname are still under consideration. The company plans to announce the full design concept and overall details in stages going forward.
