JR East to Choose New Suica Image Character by Public Vote in Summer 2026
West Japan Railway Company (JR West) will begin a proof-of-concept trial of a new type of facial recognition ticket gate on March 2.
The trial will be conducted at Osaka Station and Shin-Osaka Station in Japan. Facial recognition functions will be added to standard IC card–only ticket gates. Two facial recognition cameras will be installed in a vertical line in the direction of travel to photograph passengers as they pass through, in order to improve authentication accuracy.
Since March 2023, JR West has been conducting a proof-of-concept operation using walk-through facial recognition ticket gates between the Umekita Underground Gate at Osaka Station and the East Gate at Shin-Osaka Station. With the introduction of the new type, the existing walk-through gates will be removed. At Osaka Station, facial recognition–enabled ticket gates will be installed not only at the Umekita Underground Gate but also at the Connecting Bridge Gate, and at Shin-Osaka Station facial recognition functions will be added to standard ticket gates. This will allow both IC cards and facial recognition to be used without reducing the total number of ticket gates.
JR West will recruit monitors for the proof-of-concept trial. Eligible participants are holders of ICOCA commuter passes for travel between Osaka and Shin-Osaka Stations. Applications will be accepted via a dedicated website or the WESTER app on smartphones starting March 2.
