Air New Zealand will begin selling the world’s first in-flight triple bunk beds, called the “Economy Skynest”, from May 18.
Installation will start on Boeing 787-9 aircraft that will begin operating from November. Six sleep pods will be installed between Premium Economy Class and Economy Class. Initially, the pods will be offered in 4-hour sessions, with up to two sessions per flight. They will be available on long-haul routes, and the fee will start from 485 New Zealand dollars per session.
Bedding such as pillows, sheets, and blankets will be replaced after each session. Lighting will be optimized for quick rest and waking, and curtains will ensure privacy. Each pod will feature personal storage, USB-A/C power outlets, a reading light, air vents, a crew call button, and a seat belt. An amenity kit containing an eye mask, earplugs, socks, and skincare products from New Zealand brand Aotea will also be provided.
The product was developed over several years and finalized after tests with more than 200 customers. The design and construction were carried out in Aotearoa New Zealand.
