Chariloto and the City of Hiroshima held the grand opening of “Urban Cycle Sports Park Hiroshima” on April 18.
This is part of the redevelopment project for Hiroshima Keirin (bicycle racing) Track. The overall facility is composed of the Urban Cycle Sports Park, the West Park public park area, and the Main Park, which includes the grandstand building and hotel building.
The Urban Cycle Sports Park, which had a soft opening on March 29, was designed and its operations supervised by ARK LEAGUE, an organizer of world-class urban sports competitions. BMX flatland rider Yohei Uchino and skateboarder Sora Shirai, among others, were involved from the planning stage. The park features beginner and advanced zones shared by skateboarders and BMX riders, a dedicated BMX flatland zone, a zone for balance bikes and “fun bicycles,” and a 3×3 basketball court.
The surfaces in each zone are finished with mortar to reduce the risk of injury in the event of a fall and to provide a stable riding environment. In the balance bike and fun bicycle zone, special bicycles that cannot be used on public roads—such as frog cycles and sideways-running crab cycles—are available. At the park management building, visitors can register for use and rent helmets and other items, and there is also a Starbucks Coffee outlet.
West Park includes a lawn plaza, an event plaza, an indoor rest area with multipurpose rooms and a kids’ space, and playground equipment for children. In the Main Park, the track’s banking has been outfitted with a large video screen and new lighting, allowing for nighttime and midnight keirin races. An elevated walkway connected to the second floor of the grandstand building has been built to provide smooth spectator flow. The grandstand building is characterized by a sail-shaped roof and the Ujina Sky Deck, and is equipped with indoor viewing areas, outdoor general seating, and large monitors, giving visitors a full view of the track.
The hotel building, “Setouchi Cycle Stays Hiroshima Ujina,” is a 123-room accommodation facility designed for guests traveling around the Setouchi (Seto Inland Sea) area by bicycle. Bicycles can be brought into every guest room. The property also includes a café-restaurant and shop, sauna and large public bath, laundry facilities, a training room, and a bike maintenance area. During keirin race events, it functions as an athletes’ dormitory and management facility, and at other times it is open for general guests.
The location is inside Hiroshima Keirin Track in Minami Ward, Hiroshima City, Japan. The Urban Cycle Sports Park is open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with night-time hours from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Fees are 1,500 yen per day for adults and 1,100 yen for students, and 1,200 yen for adults and 800 yen for students during night-time hours. Coupon tickets are available. Membership registration is required, with an annual renewal fee of 500 yen. Admission is free for preschool children and for use of the balance bike and fun bicycle zone.
