Thales has unveiled its latest product in the FlytEDGE in-flight entertainment platform, “FlytEDGE Aura,” timed with the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) held in Hamburg, Germany.
The main feature is the industry’s first 4K HDR10+ tandem OLED display, which achieves more than 30% weight reduction compared to the previous generation, making it the lightest product in the industry. Each display is equipped with Qualcomm’s latest processor, delivering six times the processing power of previous systems. In terms of design, the thin bezels provide a wide viewing angle, and the port module has been reduced in size by 80% compared to earlier models, creating a cleaner, less cluttered space around the passenger seat.
The dual USB-C ports support fast charging up to 120W, delivering charging speeds 33% faster than competing products. It also features two channels of Bluetooth 6.0 for seamless pairing with wireless audio devices, as well as Wi‑Fi 7.0 connectivity. Despite its compact design, the seat box can output up to 350W and dynamically distribute power from a single unit to four seats.
The system is designed in three separate modules, enabling quick repair and replacement. Maintenance time can be reduced by up to 50%, helping to cut aircraft downtime. The reduced weight is also expected to contribute to lower fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
As the industry’s first cloud‑native platform, it can run off‑the‑shelf web applications as they are, supporting services such as streaming, live personalization, and gaming. An upgrade to the Onboard Data Center (ODC) doubles the storage capacity and adds a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to support onboard hosting of AI. This will enable the use of AI assistants even when the aircraft is offline.
