Malaysia Airlines to Operate Silver Week Charter Flights Between Matsuyama and Kota Kinabalu
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has lowered passport issuance fees for applications submitted from today, July 1.
The new fees are 9,300 yen for a 10-year passport for applicants aged 18 or older, 5,800 yen for a passport with the same remaining validity period, and 4,800 yen for a 5-year passport for applicants under 18. In all cases, online applications receive a 400-yen discount. The 5-year passport for applicants aged 18 or older has been discontinued.
Due to the fee reduction, a significant increase in applications from the same date onward is expected, and congestion is anticipated at passport offices of prefectural governments across Japan. It is highly likely that the number of applications will exceed the number of passports that can be issued, and applications submitted on or after July 1, both online and at service counters, are expected to take about one month to process, compared to the usual processing time of about two weeks.
The timing at which the application is accepted is the basis for whether the reduced fees apply. Even if an application is submitted in late June and the passport is received in July or later, the reduced fees will not be applied. Since applications at Japanese diplomatic missions overseas involve the delivery of passports from Japan, they require approximately an additional two weeks compared with applications submitted within Japan.
