Border controls at the land border between Gibraltar and Spain were abolished from July 15.
Although negotiations between Gibraltar, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Spain had continued for more than four years, provisional application began following the signing of the UK–EU treaty on Gibraltar by the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU).
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southeastern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It borders Spain and is also close to Morocco. Until now, border controls had been conducted at its land border with Spain. Its population is estimated at around 40,000.
The land border has effectively been abolished, while immigration checks by both Gibraltar and Spain will be required for air and sea travel. Around 15,500 workers cross between Gibraltar and Spain each day, equivalent to half of Gibraltar’s workforce.
In addition, some infrastructure along the border has been registered as designated historic sites. Three historic limestone gateposts with spherical decorations in the border area will also be protected. As part of security measures, night-vision cameras and motion-activated lighting will be installed along the beach.
