Japan’s Narita International Airport to Open Airport Café NODOKA in Terminal 2 on October 31
Panasonic Connect has supplied a total of 177 “Joint Kiosks” to Narita International Airport’s Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, enabling travelers to complete immigration inspection and customs declaration procedures at once. Full-scale operation will begin on September 24.
The Joint Kiosk is an electronic system operated jointly by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan and the Customs and Tariff Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of Finance. Since April 2025, it has been introduced sequentially at Haneda Airport, Narita International Airport Terminal 3, Kansai International Airport, and Fukuoka Airport. The system aims to reduce processing times in anticipation of the Japanese government’s target of welcoming 60 million international visitors to Japan by 2030.
Featuring facial recognition technology similar to that used in the immigration facial recognition gates introduced in 2017, the kiosks streamline arrival procedures by allowing travelers to place their passports on the device and verify their identity using a camera. While maintaining the convenience of a self-service terminal, the system ensures strict identity verification, including by detecting fingerprints presented by a person other than the individual operating the terminal.
The kiosks feature a universal design that can be used equally by wheelchair users and non-wheelchair users. Their screens also use guidance messages and animations prompting the next action, allowing even first-time users to complete the procedures independently.
Panasonic Connect’s facial recognition technology has received the world’s highest rating in facial recognition benchmark testing conducted by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). It is reportedly used more than 3 million times per day in Japan and overseas.
