Japan Issues Advisory Over Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia
The Embassy of Japan in Saudi Arabia has issued an alert regarding attacks targeting airports in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) announced that Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh were targeted in attacks on October 6 and 7. In the attack on Abha International Airport, two people from Morocco and Algeria were killed, while 28 people from Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, and the Philippines were injured. In the attack on King Khalid International Airport, one Sudanese national was killed, while eight Saudi, Egyptian, and Pakistani nationals were injured.
In addition, on the morning of October 8, multiple people reported hearing several loud noises across Riyadh. Interception operations against incoming objects may have taken place, although authorities had made no official announcement at the time the consular email was issued.
The Embassy of Japan in Saudi Arabia said that, depending on developments, airspace closures and flight cancellations or delays could occur without prior notice. It urges airport users to check airlines for the latest information and take measures such as minimizing the time spent at airports.
The embassy also urges Japanese residents in Saudi Arabia to take steps to ensure their safety, including avoiding facilities that could be targeted, such as military-related and oil-related facilities (photography is strictly prohibited); refraining from taking photographs of missiles, drones, impact sites, or related situations, or posting or sharing them on social media; and checking the latest information from reliable official sources.
