Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and Alaska state authorities have welcomed Alaska Airlines’ launch of flights between Tokyo/Narita and Anchorage.
The route will launch on May 13, 2027, operating one daily round trip through September 8 before being temporarily suspended. Service will resume in January 2028 with three round trips per week.
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy commented, “New air service means new opportunities for Alaska. It brings more visitors to our state, supports local businesses, and strengthens Alaska’s position as a gateway to the world.” Ryan Anderson, Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, said, “Anchorage’s strategic location makes it a natural gateway connecting North America and Asia.”
Angie Spear, Director of the Alaska International Airport System, said, “We welcome this nonstop service between Anchorage and Tokyo/Narita and appreciate Alaska Airlines’ continued efforts to expand Anchorage’s network.” Marilyn Romano, Regional Vice President at Alaska Airlines, commented, “Since 1932, we have connected Alaskans to the places that matter most. This long-requested route will create new opportunities for tourism and commerce.”
Anchorage International Airport is the world’s fourth-largest airport by cargo volume and supports cargo transportation between the United States, Asia, and Europe. Leveraging its strategic location, from which approximately 90% of the world’s industrialized regions can be reached within a nine-and-a-half-hour flight, it plays an important role in Alaska’s economy. Fifteen airlines operate passenger services at the airport, which handles 5.8 million passengers annually. It is also a gateway to Denali, North America’s highest peak.
Alaska Airlines operates routes connecting Anchorage with Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Boston, Minneapolis, and other destinations. In its summer 2027 schedule, it will launch three routes to Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Nashville.
