Lufthansa has unveiled its Airbus A321neo, named “Hamm” (registration: D-AIEM), featuring a special livery commemorating the airline’s 100th anniversary.
Over several months, designs were added to the aircraft in stages. Under the theme “Made by many. Remembered by all,” 12 employee-created designs pay tribute to the people who have shaped the airline’s history.
Of the two most recently added designs, one depicts two arms embracing the tail fin. Proposed by a flight attendant, it represents a special flight that departed Frankfurt for Bogotá on March 19, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, to bring home travelers who had been stranded at the local airport for seven days. The other design, themed around German reunification, was created by an employee who helped establish the airline’s first sales offices in Dresden and Berlin from June 1990 and experienced reunification in Berlin on October 3. It depicts people holding hands in front of the Brandenburg Gate as they walk toward a new future.
The designs were collected through an internal call for submissions. A jury narrowed the entries down to 20, after which all employees voted to select the final 12. The aircraft also features historic photographs and events, including images of Nicola Lisy and Evi Hetzmannseder, Lufthansa’s first female pilots.
The 12 designs are arranged like framed artworks around the large crane emblem painted on the aircraft. A QR code beside each design provides access to a website containing background information. The aircraft is scheduled to fly throughout Europe until the end of 2028.
