Cathay Pacific: Amadeus System Breach Exposes Reservation Information
JR East will expand the availability of commuter passes and Suica Green Car Tickets that can be purchased through Mobile Suica from March 2027.
It will newly introduce the “Show Mobile Pass,” allowing customers to purchase Mobile Suica commuter passes whose origin or destination stations include stations not compatible with IC cards. Previously, passengers had to use magnetic commuter passes when either or both of the origin and destination stations within the pass coverage area were not IC-compatible. At stations that do not support IC cards, passengers will use the service by showing the Mobile Suica app screen to station staff.
The service will apply to commuter passes and student commuter passes (for junior high schools, high schools, universities, vocational schools, and similar institutions). It will not apply to passes connecting with other railway companies’ lines, Green Car commuter passes, FREX/FREX Pal commuter passes, or child commuter passes.
The sales area will cover journeys of up to 60 kilometers in operating distance when travel is entirely on JR East lines, and up to 100 kilometers when travel extends onto JR Central lines. The boarding station must be a JR East station, and the route must include a JR East line. For sections between stations where IC card use is available, a standard Mobile Suica commuter pass will be issued.
During the validity period of a Show Mobile Pass, customers will be unable to use their stored-value balance for rail travel outside the pass coverage area. Certain services, including the Shinkansen e-Ticket Service, Touch de Go! Shinkansen, and Touch de Ekinaka, will also be unavailable. A separate IC card or ticket will be required for travel outside the covered area and for using these services. The pass can be used for buses and retail purchases in the same way as a standard Mobile Suica.
In addition, passes spanning the Suica area and JR Central’s TOICA area will also become available for purchase through Mobile Suica. Eligible passes will include commuter passes, student commuter passes, Green Car commuter passes, and FREX/FREX Pal commuter passes. The sales area will cover up to 100 kilometers in operating distance for commuter and student commuter passes, and up to 300 kilometers in fare-calculation distance for Green Car commuter passes and FREX/FREX Pal commuter passes. All origin, destination, and intermediate stations on the route must be IC-compatible. Applications through a dedicated form will be required in advance to purchase Green Car commuter passes and FREX/FREX Pal commuter passes.
For Suica Green Car Tickets (for local and rapid trains), Kannami, Mishima, and Numazu stations on JR Central will be added as boarding and alighting stations, enabling the purchase of tickets for sections extending into the TOICA area. Sales for card-type Suica will continue to be limited to journeys departing within the JR East area and arriving in the JR Central area (Kannami, Mishima, or Numazu). Passengers traveling only between stations on the Atami–Numazu section of the Tokaido Line will need to purchase a paper Green Car Ticket at a station.
