Yamanote Line and Keihin-Tohoku Line Major Suspension on April 19-20: Caution for Weekend Outings
JR East will suspend operations on sections of the Yamanote Line and Keihin-Tohoku Line for two days on April 19 and 20 due to track switching work at Tamachi Station.
On April 19, the Yamanote Line’s outer loop between Ueno, Tokyo, and Osaki Stations and the Keihin-Tohoku Line between Shinagawa and Higashi Jujo Stations will be suspended all day, and the inner loop of the Yamanote Line between Osaki, Tokyo, and Ueno Stations will be suspended from the start of service until around 5 AM. In other sections, the outer loop of the Yamanote Line will operate at about 40% of normal capacity, the inner loop at about 70%, and the Keihin-Tohoku Line at about 60% of the usual number of trains.
The following day, on the 20th, the Yamanote Line’s outer loop between Ueno, Tokyo, and Osaki Stations, the inner loop between Osaki, Tokyo, and Ueno Stations, and the Keihin-Tohoku Line between Shinagawa and Higashi Jujo Stations will be suspended from the start of service until around noon. In other sections, the Yamanote Line’s outer loop will operate at about 50% of normal capacity, the inner loop at about 40%, and the Keihin-Tohoku Line at about 60% of the usual number of trains.
On both days, express operation on the Keihin-Tohoku Line will be canceled all day. Lines operating parallel to the suspended sections, such as the Ueno-Tokyo Line, will operate as usual. Additionally, Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway will provide substitute transportation. According to JR East, about 546,000 people will be affected over the two days. In case of bad weather, the work will be postponed to May 17 and 18, but the suspensions will proceed as initially planned.
The track switching work is part of the development of the Haneda Airport Access Line. This project will move the outer loop track of the Yamanote Line and the southbound track of the Keihin-Tohoku Line at Tamachi Station by up to approximately 2.6 meters.
