JR East Introduces New Overnight Express Train: E657 Series Modification
Kinki Nippon Railway will introduce new train models “Type 1A,” “Type 1B,” and “Type 6A.”
These will be based on the “Type 8A” which has been running on the Nara Line, Kyoto Line, Kashihara Line, and Tenri Line since October 2024. They feature “Yasashiba” spaces for strollers and large luggage, L/C seats that can switch between long and cross seating, and switches for passengers to open and close doors individually. All formations of “Type 1A” and “Type 6A” will have multi-purpose toilets.
“Type 1A” and “Type 1B” will be introduced to the Osaka Line, Nagoya Line, Yamada Line, and Toba Line from January 2026. The trains will be colored blue with a two-tone scheme with white, maintaining the essence of Kintetsu while creating a new image alongside the traditional red color. The Osaka Line will receive two sets of 4-car “Type 1A” formations, totaling 8 cars. The Nagoya Line will receive three sets of 4-car “Type 1A” formations totaling 12 cars, and three sets of 3-car “Type 1B” formations totaling 9 cars.
“Type 6A” trains will be introduced to the Minami-Osaka Line, Yoshino Line, Nagano Line, and Gose Line from May 2026. They will feature the same red coloring as the “Type 8A” trains. In the 2026 fiscal year, three sets of 4-car formations totaling 12 cars will be introduced, and in 2027, two sets of 4-car formations totaling 8 cars.
The “Type 8A” will continue to be introduced on the Nara Line, Kyoto Line, Kashihara Line, and Tenri Line. In 2025, nine sets of 4-car formations totaling 36 cars are planned, with four sets of 4-car formations totaling 16 cars in 2026, and five sets of 4-car formations totaling 20 cars in 2027. The “Type 8A” to be introduced from the 2026 fiscal year onwards will include multi-purpose toilets, a first for these lines.
