MLIT approves JR East plan to separate fare calculation for Tokaido Line and Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo–Atami) from March 2026
Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) will introduce Train Automatic Stop-position Control (TASC) on the Tokaido Shinkansen in Japan ahead of deploying its autonomous operation system.
Before the autonomous system goes live, TASC will be operated at all stations and on all revenue trains starting in fall 2026. It will enable trains to stop more precisely at the designated position and, compared with manual stop braking, shorten the average time required to stop. Higher stopping accuracy will also allow shorter platform screen door panels on station platforms, which is expected to reduce the cost of installing and renewing these movable platform barriers.
Around 2028, JR Central plans to introduce trainsets equipped with GOA2 (Grade of Automation 2) autonomous operation, in which a driver remains in the cab, and will add functions for the driver to operate door opening and closing from the control stand.
Test runs of the autonomous operation system have also been conducted during daytime revenue hours, accumulating over 150,000 kilometers, and the company says no issues have been found with the basic functions.
