Thailand Announces Mourning Measures After the Passing of Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother
The Thai government has approved Cabinet measures regarding mourning following the passing of Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother.
Starting October 25, all government agencies, state enterprises, and educational institutions will fly the national flag at half-mast for 30 days. Government officials, state enterprise employees, and civil servants are requested to wear mourning attire for one year. The general public is recommended to wear black or subdued colors for 90 days.
Although the government has not issued suspension orders for official ceremonies, entertainment events, or business operations, organizers are encouraged to independently review and appropriately adjust the format of events. The Sukhothai Loy Krathong & Candle Festival 2025 and the Ayutthaya Loy Krathong Festival will be held as scheduled, although some program elements will be modified.
Events hosted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will have their format adjusted, and celebratory elements will be postponed until further notice.
The Bureau of the Royal Household will temporarily close the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram (Wat Phra Kaew) from October 26 to November 8 for funeral arrangements.
On October 25, Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi sent messages of condolence to Thailand’s Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow.
Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, is the mother of King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) and the wife of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX).
