Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has issued a warning that there is a risk of heavy snowfall from December 3 to 4, calling for heightened caution.
Very cold air is expected to flow in over Japan, strengthening the winter-type pressure pattern. Widespread snowfall is forecast mainly along the Sea of Japan side from northern Japan to western Japan, with heavy snow in mountainous areas and the possibility of snow accumulation even on flatland areas. From the Tohoku region to the Hokuriku region, very strong winds may cause blizzards, and sea conditions are expected to become rough.
For those who have no choice but to drive, MLIT is requesting that drivers equip winter tires, confirm in advance how to attach tire chains, carry chains and put them on early, and bring winter equipment such as shovels and sand. Depending on snowfall conditions, expressways and national highways running parallel to them may be closed over a wide area at the same time, and MLIT is asking for cooperation with wide-area detours and reviewing travel routes. In public transportation as well, there is a risk of large-scale and prolonged delays or service suspensions.
In regions where heavy snowfall is expected, people are being asked to refrain from nonessential and nonurgent outings by making use of telework and, if going out is necessary, to allow plenty of time for travel.
