Cathay Pacific to Increase Fuel Surcharges from March 18, with Japan-Departing Fares to Decrease from April 1
Osamu Machida, President and Representative Director of StarFlyer, has revealed that the airline is considering introducing a fuel surcharge on domestic routes.
Regarding the fuel surcharge on domestic flights, President Machida said, “In situations like this, where prices suddenly soar, and taking into account that they may fall again when conflicts subside, a surcharge is not just about raising fares for customers. It is a meaningful framework in the sense that we properly pass the cost on to fares, and then return it to customers when prices come down.”
After examining the matter during fiscal year 2026, if they decide to introduce it, the company will modify its systems and is aiming to start as early as fiscal year 2027. “Introducing it within fiscal year 2026 would be technically difficult,” said President Machida.
For domestic flights in Japan, Japan Airlines (JAL) has already indicated its intention to introduce a fuel surcharge as early as April 2027. Fuji Dream Airlines (FDA) has already implemented such a surcharge.
