ANA and Singapore Airlines Apply to Malaysian Regulator for Antitrust Exemption on Joint Business
The Scheduled Airlines Association of Japan has compiled industry-wide unified guidelines on carry-on baggage.
This move follows, among other factors, a request issued on March 19 by the Civil Aviation Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to take measures to ensure on-time operations.
In addition to the already publicized rules on the number, size, and weight of items allowed on board—up to a total of two items consisting of one personal item and one piece of carry-on baggage—the guidelines now specify that personal items must be small enough to be stored under the seat in front, and that passengers are requested to bring into the cabin only baggage that they can place in the overhead compartment by themselves in terms of both size and weight.
Furthermore, as cabin storage space is limited, baggage that is deemed unable to be stowed properly will be checked and carried in the cargo compartment. Passengers are also urged to strictly observe check-in and other cut-off times.
The new guidelines will be applied to both domestic and international flights starting April 1.
