JAL Holds Ceremony Celebrating 40th Anniversary of Nagoya–Honolulu Route
Japan’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Yasuyuki Kaneko, has expressed his understanding of the fact that Japanese airlines are considering introducing fuel surcharges on domestic flights.
Minister Kaneko said, “I understand that Japan Airlines (JAL) and Skymark Airlines are considering, as early as spring 2027, the introduction of such surcharges on domestic routes.” Regarding fuel surcharges, he stated, “They are amounts that fluctuate in line with changes in fuel prices, and they serve as a means of transparently showing passengers the portion of fare increases attributable to soaring fuel costs.”
Concerning measures to be taken until the introduction of fuel surcharges, he said, “I understand that each company is examining countermeasures to cope with the impact of the current surge in fuel prices,” and went on to explain the government’s response: “As an emergency measure to address the rise in fuel prices triggered by the current situation in the Middle East, we are providing support for fuel oil, which also covers aviation fuel.”
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has stated that it will continue to request that airlines provide careful explanations to passengers, while closely monitoring trends in fuel prices, demand and other factors, and will respond in cooperation with the relevant ministries and agencies.
