The third Boeing 777-300ER aircraft (registration: JA733J) operated by Japan Airlines (JAL) will be retired with the arrival of its May 18 flight.
JAL has ordered 13 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft as replacement equipment for medium- and long-haul international routes, the same number as its Boeing 777-300ER fleet. Of these, the airline has already taken delivery of 10 aircraft, from the first (registration: JA01WJ) to the tenth (registration: JA10WJ), and is proceeding with the phased retirement of the Boeing 777-300ER. One aircraft (registration: JA734J) was retired on August 20, 2024, the second (registration: JA731J) on May 27 this year, the third (registration: JA735J) on September 9, and the fourth (registration: JA732J) on November 20. JA733J will be the fifth aircraft to retire.
The cabin layout consists of a total of 244 seats: 8 seats in First Class “JAL SUITE” arranged 1-2-1, 49 seats in Business Class “JAL SKY SUITE” arranged 2-3-2, 40 seats in Premium Economy Class “JAL SKY PREMIUM” arranged 2-3-2, and 147 seats in Economy Class “JAL SKY WIDER” arranged 3-3-3.
The last flight will be flight JL009, departing Chicago O’Hare at 2:30 p.m. on May 17 and arriving at Tokyo Haneda at 5:30 p.m. on the following day, May 18.
Afterward, the aircraft is expected to undergo retirement-related maintenance and then leave Japan. As a result, JAL’s Boeing 777-300ER fleet will be reduced to eight aircraft.
