Hokkaido Shinkansen to Suspend Some Trains Every Sunday Due to Maintenance Work in Seikan Tunnel from May 12 to July 28
JR Hokkaido and JR East have announced that due to maintenance work in the shared Seikan Tunnel track section, some Hokkaido Shinkansen trains will be suspended every Sunday from May 12 to July 28.
The Hayabusa 43 train, which departs from Tokyo Station at 7:20 PM, will be truncated to stop at Shin-Aomori Station instead of running between Shin-Aomori and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto stations. The Hayate 100 train, departing from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station at 9:57 PM, will be suspended.
The replacement of overhead wires, each measuring approximately 1,500 meters in length, must be completed overnight. Including travel time to and from the maintenance base to the worksite, the operation takes about 6 continuous hours. By significantly extending the time allocated for maintenance work, more reliable operations can be performed. In the Seikan Tunnel, there are a total of approximately 250 trolley wires, auxiliary suspension wires, and suspension wires that have been used for over 30 years, extending a total length of roughly 380 kilometers.
