AirAsia has reaffirmed its commitment to positioning Bahrain as a strategic hub for the group.
As part of efforts to establish Bahrain as a strategic hub linking Asia with the Middle East, Europe, and Australia, Capital A reached a basic agreement with Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications in November 2025. In February this year, it announced plans to make Bahrain its Middle East hub.
A new board of directors has been established for the Bahrain business, with Dr. Sera Kildar appointed chair and Datuk Pham Lee Yee appointed vice chair. Other members include Dr. Faisal Khalid Kanoo, Nawaf Al Zayani, Akram Safa, Sir Ahmad of Wimbledon, and Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim. All will serve as non-executive directors.
Tony Fernandes, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Capital A, said, “Although the geopolitical situation in the region has required adjustments to our original plans, our commitment to Bahrain remains unchanged. Once conditions are in place, we aim to launch operations to Bahrain by March 2027.”
Beyond airline operations, the group has indicated that it will build MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) capabilities in Bahrain through its Asia Digital Engineering (ADE) unit. It plans to provide services not only to AirAsia but also to other airlines in the region, helping create engineering-sector jobs and develop technical talent. Teleport, its logistics division, has operated cargo flights to Bahrain since February and is expanding capacity with larger freighter aircraft.
