Korean Air has announced the completion of its merger review with Asiana Airlines by the European Union (EU) Competition Commission.
Preliminary discussions began in January 2021, and the formal application was submitted in January 2023. Following the submission of a corrective measures proposal in November, the review was completed after hearings and market tests.
The corrective measures demanded the divestiture of Asiana Airlines’ cargo division and support for new airline entries on overlapping routes between the two companies from Seoul/Incheon to Paris, Rome, Barcelona, and Frankfurt. T’way Air has been designated as the new entrant airline for these four routes.
The merger review has been concluded in 13 out of 14 countries/regions. Discussions will continue with the remaining country, the United States.
