KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Reduces Food Waste with AI to Predict Passenger Numbers
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has initiated efforts to reduce food waste by utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Using ‘TRAYS’ launched by Kickstart AI at the end of 2023, it accurately predicts the number of passengers that will actually board from among those booked, based on past data, from 17 days before departure up to 20 minutes prior. This allows for adjustments in the number of catering provisions.
Currently, depending on the cabin class, 3 to 5% of booked passengers do not actually board. A 63% reduction in surplus was achieved in three months, with the potential to reduce 11 tons of food waste annually. The greatest improvement was seen on transcontinental flights departing from Amsterdam, where waste was reduced by 1.3 kg per flight.
