American Airlines has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation to open a route from Washington/Reagan to San Antonio.
Following the passage of the FAA Reauthorization Act in May, five new slots will be added at Washington’s Reagan National Airport.
Reagan National Airport, with few exceptions, allocates slots only for flights within 1,250 miles, with any flights beyond this range departing from other airports in Washington. The new slots will be used for routes exceeding 1,250 miles. San Antonio is slightly beyond this 1,250-mile boundary.
If allocated, this would become the only non-stop flight between the two airports, operated using the Airbus A321 aircraft.
American Airlines operates over 25 round trips a day from San Antonio to seven cities across the United States. The route offers connections to the Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic coast, and Canada via Washington.
