WHO Declares Mpox Spread an Emergency
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared on August 14th, during an emergency committee meeting, that the spread of Mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox) constitutes a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).”
The infection has been spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo and several other African countries, and there is a possibility that it may expand outside the African continent. On August 15th, a case was confirmed in Sweden, marking the first such instance outside of Africa.
On August 15th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan issued a Level 1 Infectious Disease Danger Notice for seven countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, the Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic.
There are different strains of the Mpox virus, with reports suggesting that Clade 1, responsible for the major outbreak in 2022, may be more severe and contagious.
Preventative measures are encouraged, including avoiding contact with droplets and body fluids from symptomatic individuals, and animals that may carry the Mpox virus, as well as practicing hand hygiene using soap and alcohol.
