JR East to Operate Overnight Trains on 7 Lines in the Tokyo Area from New Year’s Eve to New Year’s Day
Four Kansai Private Railways Introduce Touch Payment for Boarding
Osaka Metro, Kintetsu Railway, Hankyu Corporation, and Hanshin Electric Railway started supporting boarding with touch payments from October 29.
They utilize ‘stera transit’ provided by Sumitomo Mitsui Card.
By touching a card or smartphone compatible with touch payment to a newly installed dedicated reader at the gates, passengers can board and alight. The supported brands are Visa, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, and UnionPay. Mastercard will be added sequentially.
The service is available at all 548 stations operated by these four companies except for Kintetsu Kashiharajingu-mae Station, Ikoma Cable Line stations, and Hanshin Nishidai Station. With these four companies starting the service, the total number of railway operators in the Kansai area offering touch payment boarding rises to 12, including the eight companies that had already provided this service. It is expected that by the spring of 2025, more lines and stations will support this service.
