JAL Group Displays ‘Japan’s Earliest Cherry Blossoms’ at 23 Airports Nationwide
Japan Airlines (JAL) and Japan Transocean Air (JTA) are displaying the ‘earliest cherry blossoms in Japan,’ airlifted from Okinawa to 23 airports nationwide.
The cherry blossoms being exhibited are of a species known as ‘Ryukyu Kanhi-zakura,’ native to southern China, Taiwan, and other areas. It is said that in Okinawa, unlike Honshu, cherry blossoms start to bloom from the mountaintops in the northern part and progress southwards. The blooms were donated by the Motobu Town Tourism Association, the Nago City Tourism Association, and the Nakijin Village Tourism Association. This year marks the 31st occasion.
A dispatch ceremony was held at Naha Airport on January 17, after which the cherry blossoms were sent to airports across the country. They arrived at Haneda Airport on the same day on JAL flight 908 and are displayed at two special assistance counters, north and south. Furthermore, they are exhibited at counters in 23 airports nationwide from Asahikawa and Memanbetsu to Okinawa/Naha.
