Kumamoto City in Kumamoto Prefecture will introduce an accommodation tax starting from July 1, 2026.
The tax amount will be 200 yen per person per night, collected through a special levy. The expected revenue is approximately 700 million yen, which will be used for tourism promotion and attracting visitors.
The Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications has agreed to the application for the non-statutory purpose tax submitted to the ministry. On July 14, the city held a practical briefing for accommodation business operators and is proceeding with arrangements, such as providing subsidies for the development of registration systems.
