The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan will reduce passport fees for applications submitted from July 1. The notice was updated as of May 22.
The new fees are 9,300 yen for a 10-year passport for those aged 18 and over, 5,800 yen for a passport with the same remaining validity period, and 4,800 yen for a 5-year passport for those under 18. In all cases, electronic applications will receive a 400-yen discount. The 5-year passport for those aged 18 and over will be discontinued.
Due to the fee reduction, a significant increase in applications submitted on and after that date is expected, and congestion is anticipated at passport offices in each prefecture. As the number of applications is highly likely to exceed the number of passports that can be issued, applications submitted on or after July 1 are expected to take about one month to process, instead of the usual roughly two weeks, for both online and in-person applications. People planning to travel overseas in July are being urged to apply in advance so that they can receive their passports within June.
The timing of acceptance of the application will determine whether the reduced fees apply. Even if you apply in late June and receive your passport in July or later, the reduced fees will not be applied. Because applications submitted at Japanese diplomatic missions overseas involve shipping passports from Japan, processing there will take approximately an additional two weeks compared to domestic applications.
