Nankai Electric Railway and Semboku Rapid Railway to Merge in April Next Year
Nankai Electric Railway and Semboku Rapid Railway will merge on April 1, 2025.
The merger will proceed with Nankai Electric Railway as the surviving company, following a resolution by the board of directors on September 30.
Semboku Rapid Railway was incorporated into the group in July 2014, after receiving a transfer of shares from the former Osaka Prefectural Urban Development from Osaka Prefecture, among others. The company has been working on activating the line area through improvements in express service and fare reductions, enhancing railway convenience, and revitalizing areas along the line including the Semboku New Town. Acquiring all the shares in April 2022, it became a wholly-owned subsidiary with the goal of furthering synergy.
With the merger, there is a possibility that fare revenue will decrease by about 10 billion yen from the fiscal year ending March 2026 due to the elimination of double payment of the initial fare.
