Why JR East Entered the Vending Machine Business in UK Stations: The Popularity of ¥600 Peach Juice
The Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation began operating Toden Arakawa Line (Tokyo Sakura Tram) car No. 8501 on April 16.
As part of the “Toden (TODEN) Rolling Stock Renewal Project,” which aims to further enhance the appeal of the Arakawa Line and invigorate areas along the route, the bureau has been upgrading rolling stock with support raised through crowdfunding. For car No. 8501, which was introduced in 1990, the bureau collaborated with designer Eiji Mitooka—known for JR Kyushu’s “Seven Stars in Kyushu” luxury train—to adopt a yamabuki (Japanese kerria) yellow body color inspired by past Toden trams, as well as wooden floors, walls, ceilings, seats, and counters, and a parquet-style floor.
At the front of the interior, a latticework (kumiko) made from Japanese cedar has been installed, creating a structure that allows passengers to see the scenery ahead from the passenger compartment. In addition to redesigning the ceiling lighting and ventilation outlets, the car has been configured so that tables can be installed for food and beverages during events, with a wide range of uses envisioned—from everyday transportation to tourism.
