
Wise Launches Apple Pay Support for Mastercard Debit Cards Issued in Japan
The San Francisco Travel Association and San Francisco International Airport held a sales mission in Tokyo from April 22 to 24.
On the first day, they hosted a destination seminar for more than 40 travel industry professionals. On the second day, they held a special cooking class for media representatives and social media influencers featuring cioppino, a seafood dish that originated in San Francisco. On the third day, they organized a VIP reception for around 40 key partners, introducing the city’s future vision supported by multi‑billion‑dollar investments and the latest facilities at San Francisco International Airport.
A total of 16 representatives from 9 organizations participated, including Giants Enterprises, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), The Westin St. Francis, and Fairmont San Francisco.
The number of visitors in 2026 is expected to reach 24.2 million, with spending projected to total USD 9.9 billion, surpassing for the first time the pre‑COVID record of USD 9.6 billion set in 2019. Hotel occupancy is forecast at 69%, and revenue per available room (RevPAR) is expected to be USD 177.85, a 7.9% increase year‑on‑year. Thirty‑eight events are scheduled to be held at the Moscone Center, which are expected to generate demand for more than 674,000 room nights. Major events such as the Super Bowl and the FIFA World Cup are also expected to further drive growth. Japanese visitor numbers are projected to reach around 113,000, with spending estimated at USD 254.2 million.
Currently, four airlines operate 56 round‑trip nonstop flights per week between Japan and San Francisco International Airport: Japan Airlines (JAL), All Nippon Airways (ANA), United Airlines, and ZIPAIR Tokyo. A USD 2.6 billion modernization project is underway at Terminal 3 West.
