PASMO Council Launches “TOURIST PASMO” IC Card for Short-Term International Visitors
Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido) have announced that the Hokkaido Shinkansen will operate at a speed of 260 kilometers per hour inside the Seikan Tunnel for six days during the Obon holiday period.
The implementation period is from August 12 to 17. On the approximately 54-kilometer section within the Seikan Tunnel between Japan’s main island of Honshu and Hokkaido, the operating speed will be increased from the current 160 kilometers per hour to 260 kilometers per hour, reducing the required travel time by about 6 minutes. This will apply to a total of 14 trains—7 northbound and 7 southbound—from the first departure until around 3:30 p.m., as well as a total of 9 trains—4 northbound and 5 southbound—from the first departure until around noon on August 12 only, and to 2 additional temporary southbound trains on certain days.
In conjunction with this change, the timetable for some connecting “Hakodate Liner” trains and some Hokkaido Shinkansen services stopping at Kikonai Station will be revised.
