Tokyo Monorail to Open Part of New Hamamatsucho Station Building on June 13
East Japan Railway Company (JR East) will sequentially abolish magnetic tickets for short-distance sections starting in the spring of 2027, switching to QR tickets.
To make it easier to scan the QR code, the QR tickets will be changed from the current small ticket size (30 mm long, 57.5 mm wide) to a larger ticket measuring 57.5 mm long and 85 mm wide. Since the magnetic layer on the back will be eliminated, JR East says this will also help reduce environmental impact during recycling.
In addition to JR East, six private railway operators in the Kanto region—Keisei Electric Railway, Keikyu Corporation (Keihin Electric Express Railway), Seibu Railway, Tokyo Monorail, Tobu Railway, and Hokuso Railway—also plan to jointly proceed with replacing magnetic tickets with QR tickets. In the future, they envision managing QR ticket information and usage status, such as entries and exits, on a shared server, and issuing QR tickets that can be used across multiple companies.
