Schengen Agreement to Lift Land Border Control between Bulgaria and Romania
The European Union (EU) will lift land border controls between Bulgaria and Romania starting January 1, 2025.
Both countries joined the Schengen Agreement on March 31 this year, with border control already eliminated for air and sea routes. For short-term stays, it is required that a passport has at least 3 months validity beyond the planned departure date, and visa-free stays are limited to a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period.
The Schengen Agreement is the largest free travel area in the world. It was first applied in 1985 between France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg and currently covers 25 of the 27 EU member countries, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, which are members of the European Free Trade Association, totaling 29 countries.
This allows 400 million people to move freely between member countries without border controls, with approximately 3.5 million people crossing borders daily for work, study, family visits, etc., and about 1.7 million people living in a Schengen country while working in another.
