Two Japanese Nationals Shot Dead in Manila; Suspect Escapes on Motorcycle
According to the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, two robbery incidents targeting Japanese nationals occurred in Manila in quick succession.
On the night of September 3, while four Japanese nationals were walking on a street in the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) district of Taguig, Metro Manila, an assailant pointed what appeared to be a handgun at two of the victims and demanded their bags. The perpetrators fled on a motorcycle driven by an accomplice.
In the early hours of September 4, while a Japanese national was walking on Jupiter Street in the Bel-Air area of Makati City, the perpetrator approached from behind and pulled the victim’s shoulder bag; when the victim turned around, a gun was pointed at them, and they handed over the bag. The perpetrator then fled on a motorcycle driven by another suspect who had been waiting behind.
The Embassy of Japan in the Philippines notes that many robbery cases with Japanese victims occur at night and urges people to avoid walking after dark as much as possible and to travel by vehicle even for short distances. It also encourages using ride-hailing services that allow driver identification and online tracking, rather than street-hail taxis.
