Cebu Pacific to Expand Japan Routes; CCO Alexander Lao Outlines Strategy in Tokyo
Japan Airlines (JAL) announced that it will allow flight attendants and ground staff to wear sneakers starting November 13.
The policy applies to flight attendants at JAL and five JAL Group airlines—J-Air, Japan Air Commuter (JAC), Hokkaido Air System (HAC), Japan Transocean Air (JTA), and Ryukyu Air Commuter (RAC)—as well as passenger service staff at 56 airports in Japan and 40 airports overseas.
Sneakers will not be provided as part of the uniform; employees must supply their own in a simple design and black color that matches the uniform. Platform-style sneakers are not permitted to help prevent tripping.
In Japan, ZIPAIR Tokyo, a JAL Group carrier, has allowed sneakers as part of flight attendant and ground staff uniforms since it launched operations in 2020. AirJapan, a low-cost carrier (LCC) brand under ANA Holdings that began service in 2024, also allows sneakers and flat shoes. Additionally, Skymark began permitting sneakers for flight attendants and ground staff on April 14, and Air Do began a trial allowing ground staff to wear sneakers on July 1.
